Whether a Visa is necessary depends on the country, duration, type of school and nationality. Clarify early on which documents are needed and who will support you in the process.
Why you need a Visa
For countries outside the EU you need a Visa to go to school there. The US government has different Visa categories with fixed procedures and deadlines. A Visa only entitles you to a temporary stay and serves to protect the host countries.
USA – J-1 and F-1
For public high schools in the USA, the J-1 Visa is standard. It is applied for by a licensed exchange organization and is valid for one school year. Students are placed at a public high school and live with a host family; school attendance is free of charge. For private high schools, you need the F-1 Visa, which you apply for at the US embassy using a form from your school. The F-1 Visa allows flexible school choice but requires school fees.
Visas in Canada, Australia and New Zealand
Canada requires a study permit depending on the length of stay. No Visa is required for stays of less than six months; a study permit must be applied for for longer school visits. Australia and New Zealand require a student Visa or student permit. Apply for your Visa in good time – at least several weeks before departure.
Visas in Europe
Within the EU (e.g. Ireland, Spain, France) German citizens do not need a Visa. However, you should still carry residence permits and school confirmations with you. For England (post-Brexit) a student Visa is required for stays longer than 6 months.
Application process & deadlines
- Forms: Visa applications must be filled out online and printed out. J-1 Visa requires DS-2019 and SEVIS fee.
- Evidence: Proof of sufficient financial resources, school place, vaccinations and insurance.
- Consulate appointment: You must appear at the consulate in person. Fingerprinting and interview will be conducted.
- Deadlines: Apply for the Visa at least in good time before departure. For the USA, a SEVIS fee is due and an appointment at the consulate is required.

Can I go to school on a tourist Visa?
No. For school stays you need a student Visa or exchange Visa. The Visa waiver program only applies to short visits of up to 90 days.
Do I have to take my parents with me to the consulate?
Your parents must sign a written consent form, but are not allowed to come to the consulate. You attend the appointment alone.
