Requirements
Whether a year abroad is suitable depends on age, grade level, motivation, language level, maturity and type of school. Not every option suits every family.
Age & school level
Most programs are aimed at students between the ages of 14 and 18. Some countries already allow stays from the age of 13, others require a minimum grade. It is often recommended to attend the 9th or 10th grade so that returning is easier.
Grades & academic performance
A good grade point average is advantageous, but it is not everything. More important are willingness to learn, motivation and the ability to understand lesson content in another language. If you have poor grades, a language course may be useful as preparation.
Language skills
Solid basic knowledge of the language of instruction is required. The requirements vary depending on the country and type of school. Many organizations require language tests such as the TOEFL Junior or an internal assessment. If necessary, there are preparation programs.
Health & character
You should be physically and mentally healthy to withstand the challenges. Allergies or chronic illnesses must be stated in the application process. Independence, openness and the willingness to get involved in new things are also important.
