A six-month period combines real international experience with a manageable duration. It offers enough time to arrive, but still requires good planning with school, family and program.
What does a half-year mean?
In a half-year program, you spend around five to six months in the host country. You either attend a full semester at a high school or combine two trimesters. The half-year period is considered a good balance: you have enough time to settle in and improve your language, but you can usually return seamlessly to your German level.
Advantages over short and annual programs
- Deeper immersion than 3 months: You have enough time to integrate and build friendships without missing the entire school year.
- Less absence than in a year: You only miss half a school year, which makes it easier for you to return and reduces costs.
- Recognition: Many schools recognize a semester if you perform well and take subjects that correspond to the German curriculum.
- Financing: The costs lie between the short program and the annual program. Scholarships and BAföG abroad can also be applied for for six months.

Start researching and applying several months before departure. Clarify with your school in which semester (e.g. 10/1 or 11/2) the stay fits best into your curriculum. Check the Visa requirements of the destination country; A student or exchange Visa is often required for a six-month stay.
